Before I begin, I would like to say goodbye to Animax, as Astro have ended its broadcast on this day.
Moving on; As an Anime Otaku, I also enjoy watching Western cartoons. From what I see, here in Malaysia at least, Western cartoons are treated differently by the hypocrites at the censorship board (Lembaga Penapisan Filem, who else?), and almost always get away with no censorship. Examples? SpongeBob SquarePants contained some form of adult jokes; While Adventure Time do get censored, there are tons of scenes showing buttocks that always get away with no censorship whatsoever.
SpongeBob and Adventure Time aside; In this blog post, I'm going to show you some of the 'Dangerous for Children' scenes from Mr. Bean: The Animated Series.
INTRODUCTION
Originally broadcasted in 2002, Mr. Bean: The Animated Series has 5 seasons total. The one I'm going to show here are scenes from the 3 seasons of the show, which was broadcasted from 2002 to 2004. As per title says, there are some scenes which are 'Dangerous for Children' (the very same term used for Japanese Anime by LPF) depicted in the show. All the uncensored images I'm going to show are taken from Astro GO, which is Astro's online streaming service, and all the images are taken in year 2021 (updated, as of 1st February 2022; Since all the scenes are now, ironically, censored on Astro's online streaming).
So, before I proceed, what I'm going to show below are written based on my opinions and will offend certain readers. If you wish to read, then proceeed at your own risk.
NUDITY
Whenever 'nudity' comes up, guess which cartoon was infamous for? JAPANESE ANIME, as usual!
Still, most people tend to ignore (probably deliberately!) the fact that nudity exists in Western cartoons as well, and Mr. Bean: The Animated Series is no exception.
Below are scenes containing some form of nudity, full or partial, in the show:
This scene, from the episode 'Dinner For Two', believe it or not, showed Mr. Bean's penis and testicles! Although the original episodes are in 4:3 format, this 16:9 format version somehow showed something that could have been censored or banned on TV broadcast. However, since this scene's transition was rather quick, it's quite difficult to notice.
This episode is also available on YouTube, and you can actually see this part if you played the video in slow-mo.
(Imagine, if this was a JAPANESE ANIME, expect a mob of angry people demanding this show to be permanently banned or heavily censored!)
Talk about Getting Crap Past The Radar!
This scene, from the episode 'Roadworks', showed Mr. Bean's bare buttocks. As in most Western animated shows, any scene showing bare buttocks like this tend to get broadcasted with no censorship. Similar scenes in Japanese Anime, on the other hand, always get aggressively censored, in Malaysia at least.
Interestingly, this episode was censored on Cartoon Network's broadcast, but not on Astro GO. Kinda odd; Since, by comparison, any scenes showing bare buttocks in Adventure Time on Cartoon Network tend to pass with no censorship.
This scene, from the episode 'Camping', showed two women bathing in an RV's bath tub. This scene was censored on Cartoon Network's broadcast, but Astro GO did not censor it.
This scene, from the episode 'Restaurant', showed a painting of a woman with bare breasts and visible nipples behind the table Mr. Bean and Teddy were sitting at. Interestingly enough, the same painting made a reappearance in the Flash-animated episode 'Pizza Bean', albeit having the nipples covered with seashells.
As of now, I haven't watched this episode on Cartoon Network yet, so I can't comment about it.
These three scenes, from the episode 'Artful Bean', showed a painting of a naked woman's bare buttocks, plus a close-up of it! Not only Astro GO did not censor these scenes, even the one broadcasted on Disney XD (before its broadcast terminated), except for the zoomed in part, was uncensored!
This episode was censored on Cartoon Network, however.
By comparison, an almost similar scene showing a naked Fujiko Mine, from the opening credits of Lupin the 3rd Part 6 was given a censorship blur (image below) on Animax.
Alright, moving on.
The final scene above, showed another painting (on the right), which also depicted nudity. Back then, this episode was aired in 4:3 format, so I didn't notice the said painting.
SCANTILY-CLAD FEMALE CHARACTERS
Other than nudity, another form of scenes deemed 'Dangerous for Children' is a sexy female character, often depicted as either naked or dressed in somewhat revealing clothing. As shown earlier, a scene from the episode 'Camping', showed two women bathing in an RV's bath tub. What I'm going to show here, however, are scenes depicting female characters in revealing clothing, including swimsuits.
These four images above, from the episode 'The Ball', showed a tanned female character in a bikini. In the first image, the tanned bikini girl is tanning under her tanning bed, with her bikini top untied. In the next three images, the tanned bikini girl in this episode is shown having a bit of bouncing breasts, and her breasts also appear to be spilling out of her bikini top.
These scenes were censored on Cartoon Network's broadcast, but were not censored on Disney XD (before its broadcast terminated) and Astro GO.
These ten scenes, taken from the episode 'Bean In Love,' showed the female singer Roxy. As shown in those ten images, Roxy is depicted as a huge-breasted woman wearing revealing dresses which make her breasts almost spilling out, and also exposed her butt crack. Not only that, Roxy's breasts also appear to bounce as well.
This episode was originally broadcasted on Malaysian TV, both terrestrial and satellite, with no censorship whatsoever. On Disney XD (before its broadcast terminated), this episode was uncensored with no rating. On Astro GO, however, this episode was given the 18 rating.
So far, I haven't watched this episode on Cartoon Network, so I can't comment about it.
By comparison, the closest Anime equivalent (at least, from my perspective) were scenes showing the episode exclusive character Hideko Kamijo from Detective Conan episodes 68 and 69 (aggressively censored on Astro Ceria, as written here), who also wore a somewhat revealing dress. However, Hideko Kamijo's physical appearance was not as overly exaggerated like Roxy. Images below, copyright Gosho Aoyama/Shogakukan, Yomiuri TV, TMS 1996:
COMBINATION OF BOTH (NUDITY AND SCANTILY-CLAD FEMALE CHARACTERS)
Unlike the earlier scenes, these show the combination of both nudity and scantily-clad female characters. Below are images which depict both nudity and scantily-clad female characters in one episode:
These images, from the episode 'Ray Of Sunshine,' shows both of the said 'Dangerous For Children' scenes. Firstly, this episode shows a lot of women in swimsuits. Understandable, since almost the majority of this episode's setting takes place at a beach (except for the last image). Secondly, is nudity. There are some of the children depicted in this episode as being naked, and the fifth image also showed a child's penis almost visible!
Speaking of the fifth image shown earlier, this episode was originally broadcasted in 4:3 format, so we can't see it. Now, this episode, and all the original TV series episodes were updated in 16:9 format, there are some scenes that were normally absent in 4:3 format.
Anyway, before Cartoon Network picked up this series, this episode was broadcasted on Malaysian terrestrial TV and also, Disney XD (before its broadcast terminated) with no censorship whatsoever. This episode is (understandably) censored on Cartoon Network, however. Astro GO, as usual, with their 'STREAM UNCENSORED' tagline, obviously did not censor this episode.
Good thing that Mr. Bean: The Animated Series was NOT a JAPANESE ANIME, right?
CONCLUSION
So, there you have it. Proof that even a Western cartoon (in this case, Mr Bean: The Animated Series) contains scenes deemed 'Dangerous For Children.' By writing this, it is my intent to show the real meaning of DOUBLE STANDARDS when it comes to censorship.
Although I have to admit that Mr. Bean: The Animated Series was censored, this is limited to satellite TV broadcasting only. On Astro GO, an online streaming service, however, is different; As written earlier, one of Astro GO's tagline was 'STREAM UNCENSORED.'
Honestly, I strongly disagree with Astro GO's tagline, because there are some shows getting censored aggressively on Astro GO, namely, Japanese Anime (thanks to the aggressive and double standard rules set by LPF). If there are other shows getting censored on Astro GO, I'd say P. Ramlee films, such as Labu dan Labi, for example.
Finally, to all those 'anti-weeb' shitposters who are stalking my blog and planning or have already mocked me with your shitty and disgusting memes before, let me tell you this:
Don't even try mocking me with your memes, because I ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!RemainUnknown522 Out.
