RemainUnknown522's Pocky Review (last edited: 21/05/2017, 07:15 p.m.)

It has been a while since I tried Pocky (previously known here as 'Rocky'), a chocolate covered biscuit stick produced by Ezaki Glico of Japan. Here in Malaysia, it is available either imported from Japan or Thailand; the Japanese version are available mostly at AEON (formerly known as JUSCO) supermarkets, while the Thai version are much more commonly found. Back then, if I remember correctly, it was originally available in two flavours, Chocolate and Strawberry; Pocky is now available in a larger variety of flavours, including Green Tea Matcha.

And so, last Saturday, I started making a review of them by purchasing a total of seven available Pocky biscuits, all in seven different flavours. All of the Pocky flavours bought are of Thai origin, as the Japanese origin, as mentioned earlier, are available at AEON supermarkets, and the nearest AEON supermarket is located at Seremban 2.

As shown in the photo above, there are seven different flavours that I bought. The flavours are:
  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry
  • Double Choco
  • Mango
  • Green Tea Matcha
  • Cookies & Cream
  • Choco Banana

There is another flavour I used to buy called Milk, but unfortunately, it was unavailable at the mini market I bought them.

As shown in the photo above, these two Pocky boxes (Cookies & Cream and Mango) have an opening tab located at the top back of the box, as opposed to the others' opening strip located on the front of the box, complete with an indicator arrow.

Now onto the review of the seven Pocky flavours...

CHOCOLATE

As shown above, it is a biscuit stick covered in chocolate (duh!). This variant is the most common, along with Strawberry. The biscuit sticks are of the usual light brown colour.

It tasted good, as usual. It is a regular milk chocolate taste combined with a nice, crunchy biscuit stick, and I loved it.

DOUBLE CHOCO

This one is much like the regular Chocolate flavour, except that it used a chocolate-flavoured biscuit, hence the name Double Choco. It has a stronger chocolate taste, but as I found out, it was not as good as the regular Chocolate flavour, though.

STRAWBERRY

The second most common Pocky flavour, this one is a light brown biscuit stick covered in strawberry-flavoured cream. It tasted mildly sweet, and it reminds me of strawberry milk. Overall, I loved it.

CHOCO BANANA

To be honest, I find this a bit unusual, as this Pocky flavour is created based on chocolate-covered bananas. However, this Pocky biscuit is a chocolate-flavoured biscuit stick covered in banana-flavoured cream. This flavour was originally sold in a smaller box, along with a cartoon picture of a monkey on the box, but is now available in a regular-sized box.

As for the taste, the banana cream tasted strong and somewhat artificial, and the chocolate flavour from the biscuit stick is somewhat less noticeable, probably because of the strong banana taste.

COOKIES & CREAM

This Pocky biscuit stick is a chocolate-flavoured biscuit stick covered in milky white cream with black-coloured cookie crumbs on it. It is basically a Pocky flavour based on Oreos and also, the ice-cream flavour it was named after. This is also one of the two Pocky biscuit sticks with an opening tab located at the top back of the box.

As for the taste, it was sweet and tasty. Its taste closely resembled a Cookies 'n' Creme candy bar by Hershey's. I loved the taste of the milk cream and the cookie crumbs, combined with the crunchy chocolate-flavoured biscuit stick.

In short, it tasted like Milk Pocky (which I also loved), but with cookie crumbs and a chocolate-flavoured biscuit stick.

Overall, I REALLY LOVED IT.

GREEN TEA MATCHA

This one is a green tea-flavoured Pocky which uses green tea matcha from Japan. This variant uses a light brown biscuit stick, covered in green tea matcha cream.

So how does it taste?

Firstly, the cream. It was slightly sweet, but the green tea taste was strong and a bit raw. If there was any close resemblance to another green tea-flavoured confectionery, I'd say it resembled the Malaysian-manufactured Green Tea KIT KAT. As for the biscuit stick, I discovered that the biscuit stick for this Pocky flavour was less crunchy than the others that used the same light brown biscuit stick (example: Chocolate flavour).

MANGO

This last one is the Mango Pocky. It is a light brown biscuit stick covered in Mango-flavoured cream. Much like the Cookies & Cream, this is another one of two Pocky biscuit sticks with an opening tab located at the top back of the box.

You know what they say, "save the best for last"; And in my opinion, this Pocky really describes the quote perfectly. As I found out, it was SWEET AND TASTY! I loved the combination of the sweet and tasty mango cream and a crunchy biscuit stick, and I REALLY LOVED IT! In fact, I still don't know why, any kind of mango-flavoured confectionery I tried tasted so good that it doesn't give off any artificial taste at all!

CONCLUSION

After trying all the seven Pocky flavours, I can now make a conclusion by listing which one I liked the most, followed by my least favourite of the seven in the list below:

  • Mango (My No.1 favourite)
  • Cookies & Cream (Tie with Mango Pocky)
  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry
  • Double Choco
  • Green Tea Matcha
  • Choco Banana (My least favourite)

To conclude this post, I have decided that the Mango Pocky is my favourite Pocky flavour due to its sweet and tasty mango-flavoured cream that doesn't give off an artificial taste. The Cookies & Cream Pocky also tasted good, and so does the regular Chocolate and Strawberry Pocky.

As for the bottom three, the Double Choco Pocky has a stronger chocolate taste, but it was not as good as the regular Chocolate Pocky. The Green Tea Matcha was okay, although its green tea taste was a bit raw; And I still don't know why the biscuit stick used for it was less crunchy, despite being similar to the one used for regular Chocolate Pocky. Finally, the Choco Banana Pocky was my least favourite due to its strong artificial banana taste and strangely less noticeable chocolate taste in the biscuit stick used for it, probably due to the strong banana taste.
